Bunting Family Pharmacy Athlete of the Week: Joshonda Johnson, Absegami girls trackIf you haven't heard the name Joshonda Johnson much this season, you probably did following the Atlantic County track and field championships on May 12 at Buena Regional High School. Johnson had an outstanding day for Absegami to help lead the Braves to a dominating win the team scoring, and for her efforts she is the Bunting Family Pharmacy Athlete of the Week. Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles by nearly a full second over teammate Cyann Moyer, and that duo finished 1-2 again the 400 hurdles, with Johnson posting a time of 1:02.71 and Moyer close behind at 1:04.20. Joshonda Johnson of Absegami won both hurdle events, the 100 and 400, at last week's county championships. (Glory Days Magazine photo/Dave O'Sullivan) Johnson also teamed up with Kayla Miller, Tatiana Beaufils and Moyer to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:00.22, besting the team from Oakcrest by nearly 14 seconds. Earlier this season, Johnson, a junior, broke the school record in the 400 hurdles, then broke her own record about two weeks later. Her time in the 400 hurdles at the county meet was a personal record. In addition, she also turned in a second-place finish in the long jump at the county meet, finishing behind Holy Spirit star Asia Young. "She is just a great athlete who has a great attitude. She's one of the ones we knew was going to be good, but she has just put everything she has into getting better," said Absegami girls track coach John Murray. "As a result, she just shines out there on the track." Johnson will have more opportunities to shine in the coming weeks at events such as the Cape-Atlantic League Championships, which will be held this week in Bridgeton, and the sectional championships.
